If you sell pet products, launching your own cat litter line is one of the most repeatable, high-margin categories you can own. Litter is a consumable — customers buy it every few weeks — so a private-label line builds recurring revenue and brand loyalty in a way one-off products rarely do.
This guide explains how private-label and OEM cat litter sourcing actually works: what you can customize, realistic minimum order quantities, how sampling and pricing work, and the step-by-step process from first enquiry to a container at your port.
OEM, ODM and private label — what's the difference?
These terms get used loosely, so it helps to be precise when you talk to a factory:
Private label means the factory produces an existing, proven product and packs it under your brand. Fastest and lowest-risk route to market.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means the factory manufactures to your specification — you define the granule size, clumping grade, scent, color and packaging.
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means the factory helps design the product with you, drawing on its own formulas and market experience, then produces it under your brand.
Most new brands start with private label or light OEM (an existing product with custom color, scent and bag design) and move toward fuller OEM as volumes grow.
What you can actually customize
A capable mineral-litter factory can tailor almost every attribute of the product:
Formula and clumping grade. Clump strength, absorption and hardness can be tuned. A multi-cat market may want maximum clumping and odor lock; a value line may prioritize price per kilo.
Granule size and shape. Round pellets, crushed angular granules or fine grains — typically anywhere from around 0.5 mm to 3.8 mm. Size affects tracking, dust and how "premium" the litter feels.
Color. Natural grey-white, pure white (which lets owners spot changes in urine color), or food-grade colored litters — rose, lavender, blue and custom shades for retail shelf appeal.
Scent. Fragrance-free (often paired with activated carbon for physical odor control), or lemon, lavender and custom fragrances at a loading level you choose.
Add-ons. Activated carbon for odor adsorption, antibacterial additives, deodorizing beads.
Packaging and branding. Your bag design, weight (commonly 5 / 10 / 20 kg for wholesale, smaller for retail), material (woven or laminated), language and barcodes.
Minimum order quantities (MOQ) and trial orders
MOQ is the question every new buyer asks. For mineral cat litter it's usually expressed by container: a common starting point is one 20-foot container (roughly 25–27 tonnes), either single-product or as a mixed load of several SKUs so you can test what sells before committing to volume.
If you're testing a market, ask specifically about mixed containers and trial quantities. A supplier used to working with new brands will help you build a first order that spreads risk across a few products rather than forcing a full container of one item.
The sourcing process, step by step
- Define your requirement. Product type, target market, estimated volume, packaging idea and any must-have specs (e.g. low dust, strong clump, specific granule size).
- Request samples. Share your specs; the factory prepares samples that match. Test them the way your customers will — clumping, dust, odor control, tracking.
- Get a quote. Once samples are approved, you receive pricing (usually FOB or CIF), MOQ and lead time.
- Confirm packaging and artwork. Finalize bag design, weight, language and labeling. Sign a simple quality agreement listing the confirmed specs.
- Production and QC. The factory produces and runs quality control. Ask for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with actual tested values for the batch.
- Shipping and documents. The order is containerized, palletized and documented (invoice, packing list, certificates) for smooth customs clearance.
What affects the price
Litter is a weight-and-volume business, so price per kilo is driven by: raw material and whether the supplier controls its own mine source (stable cost and quality), granule processing and de-dusting steps, additives like activated carbon or fragrance, packaging complexity, and freight. A factory with its own source can usually hold prices and lead times steadier than a trader buying material on the open market.
Prepare this before you contact a factory
To get an accurate quote fast, have ready: your target market and languages, estimated annual or per-order volume, the product type and any reference product, your packaging weight and rough design direction, and your destination port. The more precise your brief, the more precise the quote and samples.
A quick pre-order checklist
- Have you tested physical samples in real conditions?
- Do you have a COA with actual tested values (not just a spec sheet)?
- Is the confirmed specification written down and agreed by both sides?
- Are packaging, weight, language and labeling finalized?
- Do you understand the MOQ, lead time and shipping terms?
- Can the supplier support a mixed trial container?
