Cat Litter Types & Key Specifications Explained

A buyer's guide to mineral cat litter types — clumping bentonite, granular, activated carbon, colored/scented — and the key specs (clumping, dust, absorption, granule size) that matter when importing.

When you're importing or private-labeling cat litter, the difference between a product that sells out and one that sits on the shelf often comes down to details on a spec sheet. This guide explains the main mineral litter types and the specifications that actually matter to buyers — so you can match the right product to your market and read a supplier's data with confidence.

The main types of mineral cat litter

Clumping ball bentonite. Round sodium-bentonite pellets that form firm, scoopable clumps on contact with liquid. The mainstream premium choice in most markets — easy to clean, long-lasting, low tracking. Best all-round seller.

Granular / crushed mineral litter. Angular crushed bentonite or natural mineral granules. The irregular facets increase surface contact for fast absorption, and the pebble-like shape resists rolling, so it tracks less around the home. Popular as a value option and for buyers who prefer a natural look.

Activated carbon litter. Bentonite base blended with activated carbon, whose micropores physically adsorb and lock ammonia and fecal odor rather than masking it with fragrance. A strong fit for odor-sensitive and multi-cat households, and for buyers who want a fragrance-free story.

White sodium bentonite. A pure-white clumping litter. Beyond looking clean and premium, the white body lets owners spot changes in urine color early — a genuine selling point for cats with urinary-health concerns.

Colored and scented litters. Food-grade colored granules (rose, lavender, blue) and fragranced lines (lemon, lavender and custom scents) built for retail shelf appeal and differentiation.

The specifications that matter — and what they mean

Here's how to read the numbers on a supplier's data sheet, and why each one affects your customers and your complaint rate.

Clumping rate / clump integrity. How reliably and firmly the litter forms clumps. Higher means cleaner scooping, less waste and less litter used per month — a top driver of repeat purchase.

Water absorption. How much liquid the litter holds relative to its weight (e.g. ≥300%). Higher absorption generally means faster, tighter clumps and better value in use.

Dust content / dust rate. Lower is better. Low-dust litter means cleaner air, less mess and better shelf presentation. This is one of the most common consumer complaints, so it's worth checking closely.

Granule size. Typically anywhere from ~0.5 mm to 3.8 mm. Finer grains feel soft and natural to cats but can track more; larger granules track less. Size also affects dust and the perceived "premium" feel.

Deodorization. How effectively the litter controls odor (often measured in ppm of ammonia, or as a percentage). Critical for multi-cat and poorly ventilated homes.

Bulk density. Weight per volume (e.g. g/L). Affects how a product feels in the bag, container loading efficiency and freight economics.

Moisture. Lower residual moisture (e.g. ≤10–12%) supports clumping performance and shelf stability.

Single-grain strength. How well a granule resists crushing (measured in Newtons). Higher strength means less breakdown into dust during transport and use.

pH. Usually near neutral (around 7). Relevant for reassurance on gentleness.

How to read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)

A trustworthy COA lists each parameter with a standard requirement and an actual tested result for a real batch. Watch for results that comfortably beat the standard (for example, a dust standard of ≤0.2% with a tested result of 0.07%). If a supplier only offers a spec sheet with round "target" numbers and no tested values, treat those figures as marketing until proven.

Matching product to market

Many importers carry two or three of these to cover different price tiers from a single supplier relationship.
